AW Green Shield Season – Coaches Preview 2014/15

This year Randwick Petersham have a 17 player squad representing the club in the AW Green Shield Competition. This year Randwick Petersham have a 17 player squad representing the club in the AW Green Shield Competition. With only 3 players from last year’s side which made the Quarter Finals returning, we are fielding a particularly young side this year. The 3 boys returning form the basis of the teams leadership group with Elliott Brookes being named Team Captain. James Mahony-Brack and Tom Chichester will share Vice Captaincy duties throughout the campaign.

With 6 Under 15s players, 3 Under 14s players, and 1 Under 12s players, we have a squad which is quite inexperienced but will form the basis of our AW Green Shield sides for the next couple of years. The only players to have played in our Grade sides to date are Nikethan Radhakrishnan (3rd/4th Grade), James Mahony-Brack (4th/5th Grade) and Jack James (5th Grade). Quite a few of the boys have had a taste of our Metropolitan Cup sides whilst most are still playing with their junior clubs.

The team is playing its 3 home games this season at Petersham Oval. I know this group will appreciate playing at Petes after 1 month of 1st Grade cricket on the ground. Our four away fixtures are at Jenson Oval, Pratten Park, Waverley Oval and Glenn McGrath Oval. A tough looking draw book ended by coming up against last years undeafeated Premiers Bankstown in Round 1 and beaten Grand Finalists Sutherland in Round 7. The local derby will be played against Easts in Round 5, a game which is always keenly contested.

The competition has sensibly been reduced to 50 over fixtures this season rather then the marathon 60 over a side games. This will encourage more attacking cricket and ensure spectators and coaches don’t lose their minds. The competition will include proper 50 over fielding restrictions for the first time and teams will play 11 players, not 12 as they did in the 60 over survival of the fittest.

The expectations for the side this season is to improve as cricketers, enjoy the experience and to play competitive cricket. Most importantly we want these boys to represent our Grade sides in the years to come. Whilst most experts won’t give much of a chance coming up against the big junior regions we will try and punch above our weight in this tough U/16 representative competition like we always do!!
