This weekend we have another series of Limited Overs matches with a 10 am start in all grades. Our opponent is Blacktown and last season we gave them a “Greenwash” (wins in all five grades) for the FOURTH time! We need to do it again!

Club Championship: Last week I mentioned that I couldn’t recall us ever being 366 points from the lead in the Club Championship as we were prior to round 10. Well, we are now 426 behind!  Manly are cruising out in front with 1,073 points while we are 647 and have dropped another spot to 12th. This week’s opponent Blacktown is 18th on 426.

1st Grade is Joe McAleer Oval, Blacktown: After last week’s gutsy win over Gordon (Adam Semple’s 150th game in 1st Grade and our sixth win in a row against the Stags) we are back to 3rd place on the competition ladder. But it’s a congested leaderboard with only 8 points separating 3rd from 9th. No one can afford a slip-up in the run to the finals. Blacktown have struggled again this season and are 18th on the 1st Grade ladder. But despite their poor record overall they have a reasonable record against us winning 4 to our 7 with one drawn.

2nd Grade is at Coogee: Seven wins (two outright) a draw and one loss in 2008-09 (bowled out for 62 to lose by 202 runs at Coogee) is a great record against the boys from the west. However, they are on fire this season running 3rd on 36 points. We are 14th on 24 – just one win away from 6th spot. A few more wins like last Saturday against Gordon and we could be knocking on the door of a finals berth!

3rd Grade is at Jim Hanshaw Oval: A draw in 2007-08 when rain washed out play at Whalan Reserve was the only blemish in a run of 8 wins from 9 matches against The Blacktown Boys. We are 17th and Blacktown is 12th this season.

4th Grade is at Petersham: We have played Blacktown NINE TIMES and have WON NINE TIMES! Now is not the time to ruin that imposing record. Can our boys make it 10 in a row?? That in itself will be a club record. We are 19th and they are 18th.

5th Grade is at Whalan 2: Last week’s loss blotted our copy-book. Had we won we would have been 5th instead of 12th. It’s a tight ladder with only 2 points separating 5th from 13th!  Of the 9 clashes we have had with Blacktown they have only won 3 times with us doing the business 6 times. They have not scored a point this season and are a clear last in the 20 team competition.

Metropolitan Cup: This week’s matches are one-dayers with Green playing Sydney Uni. on Saturday at Alexandria Park and Gold playing Norths on Sunday at Tunks. Greens come off a strong win against Fairfield but face a Sydney Uni. outfit that has flogged every opponent since round 4. Greens have their weapon of choice in the heavily rain-coated George Frazakis who leads the metro run getters with 408 @31 (the next best is 267) and the catching with 8. Next best catching is Green’s Alexis Coovre with 5 catches so the Uni. batters better keep the ball on the ground. Green’s Adam Lee is equal first metro wicket taker with 16 @19. Gold take on third placed Norths in the Sunday match of the day at Tunks Oval. The young Gold boys did not fire last week against Wests and will need to step up even more this round. Norths come off two heavy defeats and look a bit short of personal so the door is open for our youngsters. Champion skipper Lasith Fernando is priming his boys ready for a big one and promises to lead form the front.

Masters Cricket: After last round’s complete washout and the Australia Day long weekend having no Masters Cricket, we come to Round 8 on Sunday 1st Feb, and come up against Mosman at Kensington Oval. They are a very strong side especially when Trent Johnston and Warwick Adlam play, both being very good bowlers they can be a handful to contain. Anyway, Randy Pete’s Masters is up to the challenge and we hope to give them a few surprises of our own. Likely Squad will be: 1. J. Mesar capt.; 2. D. Smith v.c.; 3. F. Heaton; 4. A. Malouf; 5. D. Parker; 6. S. Beck; 7. J. Hourn; 8. G. Standing; 9. G. Scott; 10. M.Wall; 11. P. Lazaropoulos.
