Round 1 of the SCA Grade Competition kicked off over the weekend, however weather saw 2nd, 4th, 5th Grade and both Metropolitan Cup games abandoned without a ball bowled.  1st Grade and 3rd Grade were able to get play in at Coogee Oval and Petersham Oval respectively with 1st Grade going down in a tight one, and 3rd Grade getting the chocolates in a classic encounter, while the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 competition also kicked off on Sunday at Village Green with RPC recording a good win.

1st Grade: Northern Districts 5-214 vs RPC 9-201 @ Coogee Oval – Lost by 13 runs

After rain during the week, Adam Semple had no hesitation in sending ND’s in to bat. However, there were 64 runs on the board before new chum Francois Neser claimed the first wicket while it was 28 runs later when Nathan Price enticed a catch to ‘keeper Anthony Sams that the second fell. Some solid batting saw 97 put on before Daniel Sams grabbed the third wicket. And while tight bowling kept the target to a reasonable figure it was always going to be a challenging chase. Anthony Sams went early and with the scoreline 4-84 Jake Scicluna (63 off 106) and Adam Semple (28 off 28) got together for a promising 53 run partnership. When Scicluna went at 6-164 we had it all to do with overs running out. Some swashbuckling at the end, which included debutant Neser setting some sort of record as he hit the first ball he received in Sydney Grade Cricket over the fence for six, saw some good scoring but in the end we were 13 short.

2nd Grade: Drawn @ Mark Taylor Oval – No play-rain

3rd Grade: Northern Districts 8-207 vs RPC 6-203 @ Petersham Oval – Won by 4 wickets

Veteran warrior Nigil Singh grabbed the first wicket of the summer and with a run-out and a wicket to James Mahony-Brack we were looking good at 3-70. But a 53 runs partnership followed by another of 41 enabled a competitive total of 207 to be set. Losing both Karl Schubert (27 off 25 balls) and Alex Sciascia (11) with the score 40 was a blow but a 61 partnership by Ben Stares (48 off 85) and Jack Lyle (29 off 53) settled the ship. Skipper Rod Stafford came out blazing at no. 7 with a typical 50 off 39 (6 fours 2 sixes)

to steer the side home with 6 balls to spare. Mahony-Brack (3-55 off 10 overs), Stafford (2-36 off 10), Singh (1-34 off 10) and Rehaan Nawaz (1-25 off 8) shared the wickets.

On the Comeback Trail

4th Grade: Drawn @ Asquith Oval – No play-rain

5th Grade: Drawn @ Kensington – No play-rain

Metro Cup: RPC Green vs Sydney University @ Marrickville Oval – No play-rain

Metro Cup: RPC Gold vs UNSW Black @ David Phillips North – No play-rain

Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup Round 2

UNSW 7-134 vs RPC 6-136 @ Village Green – Won by 4 wickets

The Bumble Bees were away to a flyer before slumping from 0-34 to 2-35 when Francois Neser (1-35 off 3 overs) and Nick Warren (1-13 off 2) struck. A 67 run partnership then put them in a solid position although overs were drying up and the bowling tight. With Adam Semple (2-22 off 4 overs) and Soumil Chhibber (1-21 off 4) giving nothing away and forcing errors the final total of 134 was a lot less than what could have been. In reply Semple (6), Nathan Price (12) and Anthony Sams (5) were back in the pavilion with just 27 on the board. Alex Kemp and Daniel Sams put on 49 to consolidate but with Sams gone for 20 it was all Kemp with a classy 65 off 48 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes) to hold the innings together.  Cameos from Shaun Eaton (17 off 18) and Jake Scicluna (4 off 7) with a Chhibber square drive for 4 with 3 balls to spare sealed Uni’s fate.
