AW Green Shield – Season 2019/20

The Randwick Petersham Brown Wright Stein Lawyers AW Green Shield team’s 2019/20 season closed with a hard fought match against Northern District at Mark Taylor Oval. Skipper Reuben Sachs led from the front with an unbeaten 104* (the first century in the competition since Brandon McLean in 2008-09). While it was bittersweet to finish just outside finals contention the boys showed a never say die attitude throughout the competition with 4 wins and 3 losses and 25 points. Included in these wins was a first ever victory for the Randy Petes over Gordon in the competition and our second victory over Sutherland since beating them in 2001-02. Interestingly it is 16 years since a team scoring 25 points has missed out on finals.

At the conclusion of the rounds Nick O’Shea equalled Usman Khawaja’s 2001-02 and Alexander Deller’s 2017-18 17 wicket haul. He also claimed the 3rd AWGS hattrick in Round 1 v Hawkesbury in a bag of 6-8 (now the best figures for the Club breaking Nick Charlwood’s 6-9 in 2006-07). They were also the equal aggregate tieing with Angus Hayman from Eastern Suburbs but with 2 less matches under his belt. Reuben led the batting aggregate with 235 at 47 with senior bat/WK Lachie Bird in second with 224 at 32.

Pleasing to note was the development of returning players Emmanuel Grogan, Jack Horseman and Josh Lau whose experience from previous campaigns was greatly evident as well as the emergence of new players to the Club including Bilal Abbasi, Haider Ali and Jack Braithwaite, whose commitment and passion for the Club on and off the field shone through. Additionally, a strong core of first year boys in Will Deller, Adam Coombs, Max Robinson, Gus Small, Sriram Suresh and Luke Takacs will take the experience gained into 2020-21. Finally, the Development Squad of Jordie Segal, Josh Bird, Raghav Malhotra, Artharv Ramakanth and Thanush Gowda provided wonderful off field support and rode the wave of elation and disappointment throughout 2019-20 in equal measure to the 15 player squad.

Finally, many thanks to the support of the parents for transporting your boys to and from training and matches and for providing some of the best lunches in Sydney as well as the Committee and Operations.

The players and coaches also thank Peter Wright from Brown Wright Stein Lawyers for his sponsorship of the team this season, and Simba Finance for their sponsorship of the match balls.

All in all it was a positive season holding AW Green Shield cricket in a strong position for future years. Bring on 2020-21!!
