After one of the craziest years we’ve encountered, the NSW Premier Cricket season is officially underway for our top two sides.
Facing off against Fairfield-Liverpool last weekend, 1st Grade began their Belvidere Cup defence with a win that included a century to Anthony Sams. 2nd Grade unfortunately fell agonisingly short in their first game under new skipper Jackson Eldridge.
Round Two sees the Randy Petes face off against Blacktown in 2 day cricket (3 & 10 October), with both sides getting the home ground advantage at Petersham Oval and Kensington Oval respectively.
Lefrand Group 1st Grade vs Blacktown @ Petersham Oval
After an impressive win in the opening round, the defending Premiers will want to continue their momentum again in a two-day fixture starting on Saturday. In a huge boost for the Randy Petes, NSW and Sydney Thunder batsman Jason Sangha returns to captain the side.
Over the years we have a solid record against the Mounties with 10 wins from 16 games, including a 73-run victory last season. The Randy Petes have also won three on the trot against their opponents this weekend.
After scoring 107 off 98 rocks last week, Anthony Sams is our player to watch. Not only did he ton up but he also took two catches behind the stumps (and in the process is now the Club’s leading gloveman – 365 dismissals), and his experience will be invaluable with some key players on the sidelines.
Suttons City Rosebery 2nd Grade vs Blacktown @ Kensington Oval
It was a heartbreaking loss last weekend, going down by just three runs to Fairfield-Liverpool. But with a long season ahead, there’s no time to dwell on that result and they’ll need to bounce back this weekend. Jacob Wood returns to the side and will add plenty with both bat and ball and a dominating hundred from the trial.
Our overall record against Blacktown in 2s is pretty strong, with eight wins from 12 games. However recent form is against us, having lost the last three encounters with them.
Mitch O’Loughlin ripped through the Fairfield top order last week, taking three out of the top five batsmen including a reality TV star. With a lack of seamers at their disposal this weekend, Pooey will have to stand up and spearhead the attack once again.
