2023-24 Cricket Preview – Round 1 1st Grade T20 & PGs

ROUND 1: T20 & Poidevin-Gray

Welcome to the 2023-24 cricket season!  It gets away next Saturday 23 September in a changed format. The Belvidere Cup and lower grade competitions won’t begin until Saturday 7 October with the first two weeks of the new season concentrating on Twenty 20 cricket in the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup competition.

FW BUILDING 1ST GRADE T20: The 20 clubs have been split into four pools of five. We are part of Pool A along with Campbelltown-Camden, Penrith, Eastern Suburbs and Western Suburbs. This Saturday, Randwick Petersham will play two Twenty20 matches at Raby Oval, Campbelltown. We play Eastern Suburbs at 9.30am and Campbelltown-Camden at 1.30pm.

We have an outstanding record and have really dominated in this competition. Since it began in 2009-10, we have WON 55 of 79 games with 21 losses and 3 draws. We have won the competition three times, the latest just two years ago. We finished 4th last season. Against Easts our record is 7 wins out of 8 with one draw (rain) and against Campbelltown-Camden it is 2 from 2. The boys will be very keen to keep that record intact on Saturday.

We have an extremely talented squad: Jason Sangha (Captain), Riley Ayre, Alex Ross, Anthony Sams, Ben Mitchell, Jack Wood, Angus McTaggart, Max Robinson, Jackson Gwynne, Jason Ralston, Shivansh Pathak, Basit Ali; Ryan Ninan and Connor O’Riordan.  Daya Singh is missing through injury.

Alex Ross is one of two new players. One of the current stars of Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, 31-year-old right hand bat, Alex has moved to Sydney from his hometown, Adelaide. He has also played Sheffield Shield for South Australia. The other is Jack Wood, a 26-year-old right-hand bat from Queensland who played two matches for the Brisbane Heat in the BBL two seasons ago. We welcome both to Randwick Petersham and wish them well for the season ahead.

It is expected that the matches will be steamed live. Check our website on Saturday morning at randwickpetershamcricket.com.au.

MANOOSH PIZZERIA POIDEVIN-GRAY (UNDER 21): We begin our campaign to defend our premiership won last year on SUNDAY at COOGEE OVAL against University of NSW in a Limited overs (50 overs each) match from 10 am. Against UNSW over the years, we have won 4 out of 6 with just the one loss and a draw. Last season’s competition win was the club’s first since the old Petersham-Marrickville club won it in 1972-73––50 years earlier! Accordingly, we will not be prepared to give up such a hard-fought title and the boys will be very keen to keep the ball rolling. While some of last season’s champions are over 21 this season, we still have a power-packed squad to defend the title. The squad is: Angus McTaggart (Captain), Blake Weymouth, Zac Keogh, Max Robinson, Josh Segal, Dave Dubey, Ben Tracey, Mahsen Narvel, James Apostolakis, Tom Coady, Jake Egan, Atharv Ramakanth.

Jake Egan is the 2023-24 Official Overseas Scholarship Programme recipient. The WA born and bred top order batsman has just returned from a successful stint in Ireland with Carrickfergus CC on the back of a strong 2022-23 season with University CC. He also impressed during a series of Academy Inter Squad games, and made his List A debut with the Northern Knights. Welcome to the Randy Petes Jake!!

There’s nothing like being at the ground to cheer on our teams. If you can make Saturday or Sunday, please do so.
