Lyall’s Preview Round 6 v Mosman, PGs Round 4 v St George and Metro Cup Round 6 v Georges River & North West Sydney
Just two wins last round and a loss in Poidevin-Gray didn’t help us greatly in the Club Championship and we slipped from 6th to 8th. However, on 430 points we are just 104 from the leader Parramatta, so it’s a tight ladder at present. A good round over the next two weekends could give us a real kick-along as our opponents, Mosman, are struggling in 18th place with just 190 points. However, we should never underestimate the “wounded Whale”, so all players need to get their act together. We play Mosman in a round of 2 day matches over the next 2 Saturdays. 1st and 2nd grades start at 10 am and the lowers from 12 noon.
A great win by 1sts last week and just 2 wickets short of an outright. 2nds surrendered easily while 3rds were run down with a huge 281 on the board. Rain upset the 4ths resulting in a tame draw while in 5th Grade it was a sensational win. And of course, on Sunday, our premiership-defending Poidevin-Gray team couldn’t match Manly’s 249. However, they get another chance against St George this Sunday. And in Metro Cup, there was no great joy with a draw for Gold and a loss for Green.
There were some interesting outcomes last round against Northern District:
1st Grade: Angus McTaggart equalled the best bowling performance in 1st Grade with 7-35 (after having 6-6 off his first 26 balls!). He also ended the match with 10-88—the first 10 wicket haul since Adam Semple produced the same figures 6 years ago against Blacktown. Luke Callanan on 1st Grade debut with the club, took wickets with his 3rd and 10th balls to have 2-2 before finishing with 4-46. And Alex Ross hit 26 (3 sixes and 2 fours) off the last over before the innings was declared to finish with 80*.
2nd Grade: The loss by 206 runs was just 6 short of the Most Runs Loss record of 212 when we lost to St George in 2008-09.
3rd Grade: The 5th wicket partnership of 166 between Josh Segal and Christian Roberts was a new 3rd Grade record. However,
NDs winning score of 8-283 was their highest against us in 3s, the previous best being 8-282 dec in 2002-03.
5th Grade: NDs were 0-54 before losing 10-38 to be all out for 92 and lose the game by 3 wickets.
Round 6 v Mosman
1st Grade is @ Allan Border: We are 4th on 18 points and Mosman are 13th with 12.
2nd Grade is @ Coogee: We have only won one match but that is one more than the Whales who have lost all 5.
3rd Grade is @ Rawson: We are 6th with 19 points while Mosman won their first match last round against Campbelltown-Camden, 3-186 to 171. While we beat them last season, they won the previous 3.
4th Grade is @ Petersham: We are 11th on 14 but the Whales are yet to register a victory. We last lost to them in 2015-16.
5th Grade is @ Kensington: We got back on the horse with a win last weekend and are now in 5th place on 25 points—just 9 behind the leader Manly and only 5 from 2nd placed Parramatta. Mosman have won just one match beating Campbelltown-Camden last round 6-247 to 76.
Our METROPOLITAN CUP matches this weekend are two-day fixtures from 12 noon on each of the next 2 Saturdays. RPC Green plays Georges River at Bland while RPC Gold plays NWS Hurricanes Gold at Castlewood. Gold is 5th in the competition while Green is 15th and could use a win.
Poidevin-Gray: Sunday sees our under 21 premiership Poidevin-Gray team in action once again. This time we take on St George at Coogee Oval from 10 am. We have 2 wins from 3 while Saints have just the one win.
