Lyall’s Preview Round 14 v Blacktown Mounties & Metro Cup Round 13 v St George and NWS Hurricanes Maroon

Good to get a couple of wins last weekend with 1st Grade in particular, putting themselves in a position to make the finals. The other winner was 4th Grade but like 2s, 3s and 5s, are well out of the running for the finals this season. The Metro Gold team is the one on the move, just 4 points from the lead after a big win over Mosman last week with a bonus point. They chased down 156 in a bit over 24 overs.

This round we take on Blacktown Mounties over the next two Saturdays. They are struggling this season and are 19th in the Club Championship with only Hawkesbury behind them. We need to fire this round. We remain 16th in the Club Championship but the frustrating thing is we are just 50 points from 12th placed Sutherland, although we are 219 from Bankstown in 10th spot. It seems unlikely we can finish in the top 10, but 12th would be a major improvement to where we are now. We need 1st Grade to keep going and gather plenty of lower grade wins. This is the round to do it.

One of the great moments in this club’s history occurred last Saturday against Sydney in 1st Grade. The catch by wicketkeeper Anthony Sams to give Connor O’Riordan his second 5 wicket haul this season, also gave Anthony his 500th dismissal for Randwick Petersham. He had previously reached 500 career dismissals which included his time with Bankstown. Prior to Saturday, St George, who had Ernie Laidler behind the sticks with them for 30 years pulling off 544 dismissals, was the only club to have included such a milestone in its records. Now there are two.

Anthony could also bring up another milestone before the end of the season as his 580 runs so far this season takes him to a tally of 7,833 in 1st Grade for the club. Just 167 more will give him 8,000. There are only 70 players in the 131 years history of Sydney 1st Grade Cricket who have reached that milestone. Fast bowler Jason Ralston has also made the record books, passing the 150 wickets milestone for the club in 1st Grade. He now has 151 and 154 for the club.

Round 14 v Blacktown Mounties

1st Grade is @ Coogee on Saturday from 10am: We are now 8th on 37 points, just 3 behind 5th placed Gordon on 40. If we can win these remaining 3 matches, it is very likely we will be playing finals cricket. The Mounties are 13th on 31 points and have had 5 wins this season.  While they beat us last season at Joe McAleer, their home ground, at Coogee, they have only beaten us once–in 2003-04 while we have defeated them 6 times since. A good win would do wonders for the team’s confidence quite apart from springing up the points ladder.

2nd Grade is @ Joe McAleer, Blacktown: We have won 5 out of 8 clashes over the years and have 2 from 3 at this ground. They are 16th and we are 20th in the competition.

3rd Grade is @ Petersham: We are 16th and they are 17th. Neither team can make the finals. Playing for pride….and Club Championship points.

4th Grade is @ Whalan: Great win last weekend and a good chance to make it 2 in a row. We are 14th and they are 19th. We have beaten them 11 out of 14. Go you good things!

5th Grade is @ Kensington: Seven losses and a draw from our last 8 games. Not a good record. A young team and on the verge of a win. We are 15th and they are 19th. Historically it is 7 wins apiece.

METROPOLITAN CUP: Over the next two SATURDAYS, Metro Gold v St George at Snape and Green v NWS Hurricanes Maroon at Castlewood, both games from 12 noon. Gold is running 5th on 46 points, just 4 from the leader Warringah. St George is 10th, 12 points behind us. A good run home could see us in a good position for the finals. Green is 15th and well out of it. NWS Hurricanes Maroon is just one point ahead in 14th spot. Could be a close match.
