Lyall’s Preview Preview Round 1 v Easts and T20 v Gordon and NDs plus P-Gs and Metro

This weekend is a real mixture. We start the first of the rounds for the lower grades and Metropolitan Cup while the 1st Grade Twenty20 Cup continues, as does the Poidevin-Gray competition. However, the weather may play a part if the forecasts are right.

In 1st Grade Twenty20 Cup cricket, we play Gordon at Bankstown Oval, THIS SATURDAY at 9am. Then on SUNDAY we play Northern District at 2pm at Coogee. Also on SUNDAY, our Poidevin-Gray under 21 boys play Northern District at Coogee in a Twenty20 match from 9.30am.

In round 1 of the regular competitions, we play Eastern Suburbs. 1st Grade has a bye due to the Twenty20 Cup competition while grades 2,3,4 and 5 play a limited overs match from 9.30 am. Metro Cup also begins with limited overs matches from 9.30 am.

1st Grade: Our two losses last weekend may well have sealed our fate in the defence of our fifth Twenty20 Cup crown. We’ll need other results and a cricket miracle to make the elimination finals. Gordon has a good record against us in T20 with 4 wins to our 3 while the last and only time we have played NDs in T20 was when we won in 2009-10. There are a few interesting milestones possible in these 2 matches.

  1. Anthony Sams will equal Adam Semple for most games on 310 if he plays both matches. He also needs one more innings to bring up 300.
  2. Skipper Riley Ayre needs one wicket to bring up 200 in 1st Grade with the club. He will be just the 4th to reach that number behind Semple (419), Daniel Sams (246) and Jake Wilson (201). He also needs 11 runs for 3,750 runs in 1st Grade for the club. He will be the 6th to score that many.
  3. Daya Singh needs only 2 wickets to bring up 150 in 1st Grade with the club. He will be only the 6th to reach 150.
  4. Jason Sangha needs 25 more runs for 3,000 in 1st Grade.

2nd Grade is @ Waverley; 3rd Grade is @ Petersham; 4th Grade is @ Trumper; 5th Grade is @ Snape. All play 50 overs matches against Eastern Suburbs from 9.30 am. Last season was a disaster for our lower grades with 3rd Grade finishing the highest in 15th position. There’s only one direction this season—UP!

Metropolitan Cup: Having survived many seasons in the cricketing wilderness, the Metropolitan Cup competition is thriving under the watch of Cricket NSW. Despite losing one of the Sydney University teams, the competition has picked up three new teams: the returning Bankstown and first-time entrants, Campbelltown-Camden and Strathfield. Standing now with 20 teams – the same as each grade in Premier Cricket – the expansion of the competition is a credit to the cricketing community and the desire for younger players to play quality cricket on turf. RPC Gold plays competition debutants Campbelltown-Camden at Marrickville on SATURDAY, which might end up being a false start with the inclement weather around, while on SUNDAY, RPC Green play reigning premiers Sutherland at Tonkin (Cronulla). Both games start at 9.30 am.

Poidevin-Gray: After a great win in 50 overs match last Sunday, we need to produce the goods in a different format this Sunday—Twenty20. NDs lost to Sutherland after scoring 8-270 last weekend so we have a bit of a leg-up. But NDs are always tough but our boys have the mettle to take them out. The issue for us however, is that we have NEVER beaten NDs in PGs, losing 6 out of 7 with one match tied. Time to set that record straight. Our PGs have played 6 T20 matches and won 3.
