Lyall’s Preview Round 3 v Manly-Warringah and Metro Cup Round 3

This weekend brings another round of limited overs matches. We play defending club champions Manly-Warringah in grades 1 to 5 while the two Metro teams are up against Blacktown and Fairfield-Liverpool.

It’s been a very ordinary start for the club with wins at a premium. Injuries and the unavailability of key players coupled with not being able to get over the line in the close matches, has created early struggles. None of the 1st Grade pace attack of Angus McTaggart, Daya Singh, Luke Callanan (all injured) and Jason Ralston (overseas) with 399 1st Grade wickets between them, were available for the match against Parramatta. And while our Metro Green team was the only side to record a win last weekend, there were some promising performances along with some important milestones.

Eknoor Singh

  • 1st Grade: Eknoor Singh scored 74 against Parramatta on Belvidere Cup debut with the club. There have been only four better debut scores for us in 1st Grade.
  • Anthony Sams became our most capped player with 311 matches (all in 1st Grade)—one more than Adam Semple. He also hit his 36th half-century with 50 against Parramatta. He now needs just 9 runs for 8,000 with us.
  • Riley Ayre’s 3 catches took his club career tally to 90 in 1st Grade–just 6 behind Adam Semple.
  • Ben Montedoro’s 4-32 off 10 overs came after he had previously bowled only one over in 1st Grade. He now has 96 wickets for the club and this Saturday will play his 100th match.
  • Max Robinson’s 100 in 2nd Grade was his first ton since making 112 v Sutherland in 3rd Grade in 2022-23.
  • England under19s Jack Carney smashed 29 off 21 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes in 2nd Grade, 2 days after arriving.
  • Keegan van Keulen’s 65 off 86 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes v Parramatta was one of the best debuts in 3rd Grade.
  • Jackson Dodd displayed the benefit of a winter in the UK with a fine double of 61* (59) and 3-46 (9) in 3rd Grade.
  • Junaid Mansoor (13*) and Toby Mackenzie (6) faced 102 balls between them, scoring 27 for the 10th wicket in 4ths.
  • RPC Green’s Devesh Negi took 6-16 in the Metro Cup (the 7th best figures for Randwick Petersham) clash with Gordon at Marrickville Oval.

Saturday: 1st Grade is @ Coogee; 2nd Grade is @ Manly; 3rd Grade is @ Petersham; 4th Grade is @ Graham; 5th Grade is @ Snape. AlL matches start at 10 am.  Last season Manly beat us in all five grades for the third time since 2018-19. In 2021-22 we beat them in the top three grades and there’s no reason why we can’t do that again—and even better—this time around. Beware the wounded Randy Pete!

Metropolitan Cup. RPC Gold is @ Marrickville on Saturday, with Blacktown coming to our backyard. The Warriors were the early front-runners in the competition last season, but there isn’t enough information available on them yet this season to make a judgement. Both matches against Blacktown last season were low-scoring thrillers, with Green managing to get over the line; RPC Green is @ Fairfield on Sunday. For whatever reason, Fairfield-Liverpool has moved their lower-grade matches to Fairfield Oval this season, with their prior fortress, Don Dawson, now being used for middle grades. It will be a very fresh and inexperienced team taking the trip down the M5 on Sunday. Both start at 10 am.
