Lyall’s Day 2 Preview Round 6 v Hawkesbury & Metro Cup
We enter round 6 this Saturday with all teams in an interesting position. And it’s all pretty much up to the bowlers as we’ll be bowling in all games but one. If they can bring their A -Game, we’ll take home a motza of points!
1st Grade at Coogee: Last Saturday, the side hit up a record 340 against Hawkesbury. The previous best score against them was 7-335 in 2014-15. However, Hawkesbury has exceeded that record total on two previous occasions. In 2009-10, they won with a score of 369 at Coogee while in 2018-19, they belted up 377 in a drawn match at Petersham. At stumps on Saturday, the Hawkesbury openers put 72 on the board without loss. One of those is ex-Randy Pete, Jack James, who still holds a club record, being the youngest player at 17 years and 15 days to score a century in 3rd Grade. He is also the third youngest to score a ton in 2nd Grade. Dan Sams made a welcome return to 1st Grade scoring 24 while big brother, Anthony, got within 216 of a career tally of 9,000 runs when he hit 87 last weekend. He has 309 runs already this season, although new recruit Eknoor Singh is doing even better, scoring 373. With 21 wickets this season, Riley Ayre needs just 2 more for a career milestone of 275 1st Grade scalps.
2nd Grade at Owen Earle: In the final few moments last Saturday, the team edged past the Hawkesbury total of 145 to finish with 5-149 after Max Robinson made 49 and Jack Carney 43. But the star of the day was 18-year-old leg-spinner, Atharv Ramakanth playing his first match in 2nd Grade. He took wickets with his first, fourth and 11th balls before finishing with 5-39 off 14 overs with 4 maidens.
3rd Grade at Petersham: Sent in to bat, the side knocked up 186 with Yashvardhn Singh’s 46 top score. Zack Narayan claimed a quick wicket and at stumps the Hawks were 1-24 off 10 overs.
4th Grade at Benson Lane 2: Batting first, the side was dismissed for 205 with Nihal Reddy making 47 and Archie Robinson 46. Like 3rds, Toby Mackenzie picked up a quick wicket to have the locals 1-16 off 11 overs at stumps.
5th Grade at Snape: Sending the Hawks in to bat was a stroke of genius as they were rolled for a record low score of 55. Hero with the ball was slippery 18-year-old pace bowler, Kaden Warner (the son of David Warner’s brother Steve), who ended with the amazing figures of 5-9 from 8 overs. While there have been more wickets taken in an innings, Kaden’s figures are the best in 5th Grade in our 23 years for a neat 5 wicket haul. Previous best was Marcus Bain with 5-11 against Blacktown in 2010-11. And to complete an outstanding double, he top-scored with 40* off 48 balls to enable a closure at 6-129 with a lead of 74. In the second dig, the Hawks are struggling at 5-61 with young Kaden bagging another two wickets. Not bad for a team which lost the first four rounds!
Metro: RPC Green is chasing Mosman’s 166 at Balmoral. Their 9 bowlers did well last Saturday, knocking over 5 of the Whales for ducks although another 4 made between 29 and 42. At Petersham last Sunday, RPC Gold hit up 156 with Asif Rasheed making a fine 52 off just 57 balls. They have NWS Hurricanes Maroon 3-58 in reply.
