Lyall’s Preview Round 9 v Sydney and Metro Cup – Legends and Sponsors Day
Congratulations to Todd Greenberg on his appointment as the next CEO of Cricket Australia. Todd is a current member of Randwick Petersham Cricket Legends Society and a player with the old Randwick club. It is a fantastic appointment by Cricket Australia and one welcomed by everyone who knows him. He will bring plenty of sports administration experience to the role and we look forward to him taking up the position in March 2025. It’s great for Todd. Great for this club. And great for cricket.
It’s a BIG DAY at Coogee Oval THIS SATURDAY, 7 December, as it’s “Legends and Sponsor’s Day”. It’s a day when we can rekindle friendships built over many years with the many former players and supporters expected to attend. It all starts at 11.45am. The day will also have a nostalgic flavour with many stories being told of the great days spent with Rhys”Boonga” Banwell, one of the real characters of the club, who passed away in Coffs Harbour 3 months ago, aged just 65.
While all of that is going on, our 1st Grade team will be doing battle on the centre square against Sydney CC in a limited overs match—round 9 of the Belvidere Cup which doubles as round 4 of the Limited Overs competition. Lower grades will also play 50 overs matches against Sydney while in Metro Cup, Gold will play Hawkesbury and Green, Strathfield. All games start at 10 am on Saturday.
A real dampener last weekend with only two games getting started on Saturday while a storm cruelled the Metro local derby at Coogee on Sunday. Two’s went down in the last over of the reduced 40 overs match being short by 3 runs, while 4th Grade brought home a bonus point with a decisive win over Blacktown after they were dismissed for just 76. Toby Mackenzie was the star, taking his first “5-for” with 5-23 while Kaden Warner was again in the wickets with 4-13. Our under 21 boys also went down to Gordon on Sunday in round 5 of the Poidevin-Gray competition.
The draw caused 1st Grade to drop from 4th to 6th on the points ladder while the club maintained it’s 13th position in the Club Championship. Sydney CC is 19th and if we can take advantage of the ordinary season they are having, it could be a springboard for us. While 1st Grade has a good record against them in recent seasons, our lower grades are a bit ordinary. Four seasons ago, we defeated Sydney in a thrilling 1st Grade Grand Final at Drummoyne Oval to take out the Limited Overs Cup. Let’s hope we can keep our record intact against them in limited overs cricket.
There are a few prospective milestones to look out for this weekend. Eknoor Singh has now scored 437 runs this season and needs just 13 more to bring up a career total of 2,500 in 1st Grade while 12 by Dan Sams will give him a career 1st Grade tally of 4,000. Anthony Sams keeps marching on towards 9,000 1st Grade runs and now has 8,857. Behind the stumps, he brought up 525 dismissals in Round 7. His target is the 67-year-old record of 542—17 more to get. Congratulations to E-Young ‘Pingu’ Khoo, who brought up 100 matches for Randwick Petersham last weekend at the annual Metro derby – the 6th player to reach this mark in Metro Cup, Pingu has an exceptional record of 114 wickets at 18 (4th highest), and also shares the record 10th wicket partnership for the club in Metro.
This Saturday’s matches: 1st Grade @ Coogee; 2nd Grade @ Drummoyne; 3rd Grade @ Petersham; 4th Grade @ Birchgrove; 5th Grade @ Kensington.
Metropolitan Cup: RP Gold v Hawkesbury at Bensons Lane; RP Green v Strathfield at Snape.
